Passing on Routine Maintenance

Mon, 11/28/2011 - 3:59pm -- Michael Harris

Is my fluid really that bad? Is my air filter really that dirty? Can’t it wait? These are questions that most people have when it comes to doing routine or preventative maintenance. The truth is,sure,it can wait and you most likely won’t see extreme damage immediately, but that doesn’t mean that damage is not being done every mile that the service is postponed.

The longer maintenance is pushed back and forgotten about, the more damage is being done to components within your vehicle and the higher costs you will incur down the road.

Get Ready for Cold Weather: Belts and Hoses

Wed, 10/26/2011 - 2:03pm -- Michael Harris

Cold weather can wreak havoc on your car, especially its belts and hoses. If you’ve ever seen a steaming car on the side of the road in the winter, chances are that cold weather played a major role.

Your belts and hoses become brittle and weak when it’s chilly out and during temperature changes like when you’re driving around with a hot, warmed up engine in the freezing winter weather. This is especially true of belt driven components, which become harder to turn when they’re cold and thus are at a higher risk for belt failure.

Keeping on Top of Your Tires

Tue, 09/13/2011 - 3:58pm -- Michael Harris

Many modern cars have tire pressure meters that will notify you when the tire pressure is low. Without these meters, it is possible that a pressure drop will go unnoticed until your tires are ruined, or worse, blown out.

When tires are properly inflated, they will wear evenly and the tires will last longer. If a tire is used while under-inflated, the sidewalls will take most of the pressure and the tire will wear on the outside. If a tire is over-inflated, it will bulge in the middle and the car will run on the center part of the tire.

Less Driving Doesn’t Equate to Less Maintenance

Tue, 07/26/2011 - 4:01pm -- Michael Harris

Driving less doesn’t make it okay to skip out on your routine maintenance. That's because there are basic items that still need regular service, even if the vehicle is parked most of the time. Tires, batteries, fluid levels and the exterior condition are the four main things to look out for in order to keep your rarely driven vehicle in top shape.
